Advantages and Disadvantages of Root Canal Therapy

root canal therapy

RCT is one of the most popular treatments. People go for the easy and painless procedure to save their teeth rather than expensive therapies where you need to extract them. Here are why people prefer getting a root canal over other alternative treatments.

Advantages of RCT:

It is always better to get the natural teeth treated instead of pulling them out, which is way more painful. The biggest perk of getting RCT is saving your natural teeth. Extracting natural teeth can lead to sagging skin and dislocation of the jawbone. However, RCT helps restore natural teeth and makes the skin look firm.

To start the root canal therapy, the tooth is given local anesthesia, which produces numbness in that area. Decades ago, people had to bear the pain while getting a root canal or any other dental treatment. But with the advancement in medicine, anesthetic drugs are used today to give the candidates the most relaxing and pain-free treatment.

RCT doesn’t produce any inflammation or pain afterward as well. The connection of the teeth to the other nerves is lost due to the removal of nerves inside the pulp. When there is no nerve, the teeth will not feel any pain, whether it is due to an infection or pressure.

Root canal therapy is done when the pulp of the teeth gets infected due to the germs and can ultimately lead to severe cavities. When the pulp along with blood and nerve connections are removed, the nutrition supply of the teeth gets blocked. As the teeth are mature enough at this stage so they won’t need blood supply from the body, they can rely on connective tissues. But the germs cannot find enough space and nutrition for their growth, so the risk of infection and cavities is eliminated by having root canal therapy.

Disadvantages of RCT:

Sometimes the teeth become weak after getting root canal therapy. It happens when the teeth haven’t grown enough, and they still need the nutritional supply from the body, but the connection is lost after RCT.

If the crown is not added after root canal treatment, it can also lead to sensitivity and weakness in the teeth. The exposed pulp becomes more sensitive and may become weak and infected.

While doing root canal therapy, wholes are drilled in the teeth to remove the infected pulp and add the new artificial material to fill in the canal. But suppose the holes are not sealed properly after filling. In that case, it can cause an infection there, or the material gets loose after constantly adding water and germs.

Final Thoughts

RCT is a cost-efficient therapy and can save you money and natural teeth. Along with other pros, it doesn’t need any specific care. The only thing that you should consider is getting the right treatment from an experienced dentist.
